Engineering continues to be one of the most important fields in today’s workforce. It is by far the most popular major for new college freshmen, and it continues to be one of the most demanded positions at companies across the nation.

Here is just a little bit of information to give you an idea as to how much of a demand there currently is for engineers:

Massive numbers of engineering jobs: As of the beginning of 2015, there were approximately 1.6 million engineering jobs across the United States, with that number steadily rising. Of these jobs, civil engineers accounted for the largest chunk (approximately 274,000) followed by mechanical engineers in a close second (264,000) and industrial engineers in third (229,000). Those three categories of engineers, plus electrical and electronics engineers, make up two thirds of the entire American engineering workforce, which should show just how important and in-demand those workers are.

Incredible job growth: Between 2010 and 2015, job growth in the engineering field was in the double digits in four different engineering professions: petroleum engineering (30 percent), mining and geological engineering (12 percent), biomedical engineering (10 percent) and industrial engineering (10 percent). Engineering jobs as a whole grew by seven percent in that same time period, with every engineering occupation adding jobs. Mechanical engineers added the most total jobs (approximately 21,500), though did not experience double digit percentage growth.

Engineering graduates shooting up in numbers: After a period of standstill in the early 2000s for engineering graduates, amounts of engineering diplomas have experienced a rapid increase since 2007. Between 2010 and 2015, there was a 33 percent increase in the amount of annual college graduates with engineering degrees.

Clearly, businesses and individuals find themselves in greater need of engineering services than ever before. This is one of the reasons REDI is such a tremendous resource for a wide variety of industries. We have a number of highly skilled engineers on staff who are able to take on a wide range of jobs and tasks.
